In October 2022, I hired Kal, Owner/Manager, to install a premium/expensive iron fence on 4×4 posts for 2 properties in the Beaches with a term of 4 — 6 weeks. This was a nightmare as Kal was unprofessional, unaccountable, and unapologetic, and now we have an unfinished/damaged fence, resulting from his poor workmanship and installation.
Kal was to supply me with 4×4 galvanized/powder coated posts, and when I asked what time they would arrive the next day (as scheduled), he said he needed 2 more weeks. This impacted my landscaping job that I had advised Kal was being held back until the posts were installed. This resulted in unnecessary delays and last minute rescheduling, which pushed my landscaping project further into December, and the fence could not be completed before year's end.
Originally, Kal showed how their powder coating doesn't chip on a sample piece of metal, yet everything came chipped. When asked about it, Kal said it happens, but he would touch it up with paint. After a late restart at the end of January, Kal forced, kicked, wedged, hammered the panels in place, and even grinded away the galvanize to bare metal, damaging the fence. Despite the posts sitting for 2 months in harsh weather with snow, ice, and salt, they never rusted because the galvanize layer was intact, but within days of his installation, rust had already begun to form.
After watching his installation, I noticed that they were confused about which panels belonged where. This resulted in two full sections being uninstalled, despite having them sitting in the truck. When I asked why they weren't installed, Kal said that all of his drill batteries had died (within the 2+ hours that they worked, apparently). When I asked about the poor quality and damages, he offered the galvanizing/powder coat companies for me to discuss these issues to confirm the damage from their installation was not an issue. When I asked why items on the contract were missing, he said I had told him differently in person so he relied on what I apparently told him instead of following the written contract (which my texts and emails proved otherwise). Despite his poor workmanship, Kal has never offered any apologies to this day.
After speaking with the galvanize company, I was told that the metal would be protected for over 40+ years, provided the galvanize layers were intact. I later found out that it could be protected for up to 175 years, so it was obvious these were not just superficial scratches. When I asked Kal about why the installation was so sloppy, he admitted that hes never actually installed a 4×4 post fence before for residents but failed to mention it when I hired him, or I would never have hired him had I known he was inexperienced.
When I asked him about the deep gouges/rust, he said he would touch it up with paint. It was -11 degrees, and he said he would come a few days later when it was warmer at 4 degrees (0 with the windchill). Kal sent me a video of an industrial-grade acrylic paint used for touch ups. Kal gave me the number of his paint contractor, but when I called the powder coat paint company, I found out that it's only Benjamin Moore LATEX paint and not the product he sent but was also told not to apply it in freezing weather as it was only latex. Having painted the exteriors of both homes in 2021, BM confirmed that the paint had to be applied in proper conditions for it to cure (above 10 degrees and allowed to cure for 30 days in about 10 degree weather). At best, such actions demonstrate negligence, at worst, they are deliberate misrepresentations.
After inspecting the fence further for more scratches, I realized that Kal had deliberately welded multiple areas on the fence where the patterns didn't match. While he promised a fence that was aesthetically beautiful and premium, Kal chose to take the time to weld these pieces together, knowing they did not match and the patterns did not repeat seamlessly. Welding these pieces together takes time, and then they have to be shipped out to be galvanized and painted.
Furthermore, after thoroughly inspecting the fence after the snow melted, I came to find out that the majority of the fasteners used to hold up the fence, corroded and broke off, leaving at least one full section falling off right beside a very busy sidewalk by Woodbine Beach and the other panels being held up with as little as 1 screw. I've now had to keep the fence supported by zip ties to ensure these too didn't fall off and accidentally push a pedestrian from the sidewalk into the busy street.
I told Kal that he misled me with the painting/galvanizing, downplayed the severity of the damages, and showed that the fence patterns did not line up, yet Kal expressed no accountability and offered no apologies whatsoever. I had asked that he return to finish the job, repair the damages, correct the mistakes, and for the posts that were expensive to remove/repair but in his last communication, he said he didn't want to return to the jobsite.
Even now, August 2023, after Kal spoke with my lawyer about the matter and advised that he would get back with a resolution, Kal went radio silent and now I've had to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and see if they can assist in the resolution; however, if he continues to refuse to repair the fence, I'm left with no choice but have a third party company remove his shoddy fence and install a new one that is the premium, durable, aesthetically beautiful fence that Kal had promised, which will cost significantly more than my contract with Iron Railings International Inc. because the landscaping and fence must be removed and then seek damages in court. Thankfully, the photos speak for themselves, as you can clearly see for yourself.
I would strongly caution anyone against hiring Iron & Railings International Inc. and Kal, be wary of the promises and resolutions that are offered to you. The quality of their work is shoddy at best, their lack of accountability is appalling; and the disrespect you are treated with is consistent and totally unnecessary. Save yourself the headache and choose a much more reliable fencing company, where your money is well spent, you can get a product that will last you years to come, and you'll truly be valued as a client.… – show
